Canadian Institute of Planners Fellows Travel Scholarship

CIP will award one Fellows’ Travel Scholarship in 2018 of $4,000.

The College of Fellows in association with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), is pleased to offer a scholarship, to a student enrolled in their final year of an undergraduate planning program recognized by CIP, which will further their study and experience in the field of planning. The scholarship will provide an opportunity for the student to travel, observe, and study, innovative, leading-edge planning projects first hand, thus contributing to their education, anticipation and excitement for the profession they are about to enter.

Eligibility

Available to Student Members in their final year of an undergraduate planning program recognized by CIP. Travel must be completed in the same calendar year that the scholarship is awarded.

Application information required:

  • The applicant’s full contact information
  • Their university program enrollment information and official transcript 
  • A recommendation from their school’s Department Head 
  • A recommendation from someone who is familiar with the applicant’s commitment to community service, volunteerism, etc.
  • A list of the applicant’s accomplishments, community service, volunteerism, etc.

Travel proposal

The proposal must provide a rationale for the travel experience, why it is important and what the student expects to gain from it. The proposal is to be no more than 2 pages in length (double spaced) and include a separate one page budget description. The proposal must also indicate how the results of the travel study will be communicated to members of the planning profession in Canada. This could include a presentation at the Fellows Session at the CIP Conference, submission of a video, web site, article, poster or other medium. Upon receipt of completed forms and proposals, all materials become the property of CIP and will not be returned. The winner must agree to submit a copy of their travel study report or research to the CIP office upon completion and must consent to having the work published in whole or in part by CIP. 

Criteria

Applicants will be selected for this award on the basis of:

  • Demonstrated leadership and commitment to community and their chosen profession and professional association; 
  • Academic achievement; 
  • A proposal to travel and explore a leading-edge, innovative or new planning initiative or project that will contribute to the depth and breadth of the student’s educational experience. 

Deadline

Your application and summaries must be completed online and successfully submitted no later than March 15, 2018.  Applications will be accepted online beginning in Winter 2017-2018.

Jury

The selection of the scholarship winner will be made by a jury consisting of three members of the College of Fellows and the Vice President of the Planning Student Trust Fund. The jury will verify that the eligibility criteria have been met. Their decision is final. The scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2018 and the winner will be presented with a certificate at the CIP/MPPI 2018 National Conference in Winnipeg. The jury will also recommend the name of a Fellow in whose name the scholarship will be awarded in that year.

The College of Fellows is a special status for Members developed by CIP that recognizes excellence, identifies prominent role models, promotes advances in planning practice and draws leaders to the forefront of planning in Canada. It is given only to those who exhibit the highest professional attainment and a wide breadth of experience within a Canadian or international planning context.
